Description:  

The University of California, Merced is the newest and tenth campus of the University of California system and the first American research university built in the 21st century. With approximately 2,600 students, UC Merced has planned for additional student growth until we reach an enrollment of approximately 25,000 students. With undergraduate, graduate, and PhD programs, plans for a future medical school program, partnerships and community involvement, the UC Merced campus is continually evolving, requiring talented, knowledgeable and dynamic educators, researchers, management and staff.

Under the general supervision of the Associate Director of Admissions – Outreach, and limited reporting to Assistant Directors of Admissions, the Admissions Advisor will recruit students for UC Merced; act as a representative of UC Merced and the University of California; organize and collaborate with the events coordinator with conferences and events; projects and activities; collect and analyze data; track and evaluate program effectiveness and develop strategies to meet recruitment goals. The incumbent will also develop and implements regional logic model for designated area that aligns with the Office of Admissions' overall strategic goals. The staff member will effectively utilize databases, and web-based tools for recruitment activities. The Admissions Advisor must work well under pressure, meeting multiple and sometimes conflicting deadlines. The incumbent shall at all times demonstrate cooperative behavior with colleagues and supervisor. The incumbent will also evaluate transcripts in the admissions process.

Qualifications:   REQUIREMENTS

• Ability to exercise independent judgment in applying a variety of procedural guidelines.
• Analytical skills to make accurate and consistent interpretations of a broad variety of academic and administrative procedures.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills, including awareness of cross-cultural and intercultural distinctions that affect interactions with a diverse population.
• Excellent decision-making ability in the absence of specifically defined rules.
• Strong organizational skills to establish priorities and complete assignments under pressure of time constraints and competing deadlines.
• Ability to clearly present complex, technical information and issues in professional settings.
• Excellent presentation skills sufficient to convey information clearly and respond appropriately to a variety of audiences. Ability to prepare and present targeted admission materials as needed for specific majors or applicant populations.
• Ability to exercise discretion and good judgment in confidential and sensitive matters.
• Ability to work independently as well as cooperatively as a member of a larger unit.
• Strong project management and organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to effectively use a variety computer applications, databases, and web-related applications.
• Excellent time management skills and ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines with little supervision.
• The ability to travel distances in excess of 100 miles to variety of venues.
• Bachelors Degree with three years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Experience in a university, K-12, or community college setting preferred.

PREFERRED COMPENTENCIES
• Knowledge of UC admissions practices and procedures, including undergraduate evaluations.
• Knowledge of international educational systems.
• Working knowledge of student information system, as well as other student-based computing environments.
• Admissions experience with knowledge of transfer credit policies, a-g course lists and related university outreach and admission practices.
• Experience with the ASSIST web site (statewide articulation database)
• Knowledge of languages other than English.

Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree in higher education, college student personnel, counseling, advising or related area is preferred.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:

- Two years demonstrated experience working with students in a higher education or equivalent setting
- Demonstrated knowledge of issues affecting American Indian students in higher education is required
- Familiarity with student development theory and identity development theory;
- Ability to complete short-term and long-term projects;
- Ability to work collaboratively and with diverse constituencies in exchanging information and creating strong working relationships;
- Well developed communication skills (written, oral, and electronic) are essential;
- Demonstrated ability to provide culturally and academically appropriate student programming

Principal duties:

- Facilitate campus visits for prospective American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Native Hawaiian students by working closely with the Admissions Office, Connections Program, and coordinating with the College of Menominee Nation Transfer Agreement;
- Contact freshmen and other newly admitted American Indian and Alaskan Native students to welcome them to the University and to serve as a personal point of reference for them, their families, and their tribes;
- Establish and maintain direct contact with newly admitted, transfer and continuing students to help access campus and community resources;
- Help resolve problems when appropriate. Provide basic academic advising and refer students to appropriate offices for more specialized advising services;
- Work with University student support units, the American Indian Studies Program and tribal and community resources in developing effective response mechanisms and programs that are sensitive to the needs of American Indian students;
- Establish and maintain outreach and support for the American Indian cultural resource facility at UW-Madison.
- Establish and maintain ongoing relationships with the American Indian and Alaskan Native student organizations, including Alpha Pi Omega Native American Sorority, Indigenous Law Students Association, UW-Madison Chapter of the American Indian Science & Engineering Society, and the American Indian student group Wunk Sheek. Assist in the coordination of sponsored events and activities;
- Develop a working network of faculty, academic advisors, and Minority/Disadvantaged Coordinators in all nine schools and colleges to assist in the transition of American Indian and Alaskan Native students on campus, to support their success and identify areas of improvement;
- Establish and maintain contact with institutional offices and programs serving American Indian and Alaskan Native students (i.e., Division of University Housing, Office of Student Financial Services, Lakeshore Nature Preserve, Chancellors Scholars and Powers Knapp Scholars Program, Academic Advancement Program, TRIO Program, Office of the Vice Provost for Diversity and Climate, and the Wisconsin Alumni Association);
- Offer educational opportunities to institutional offices and campus partners to learn about American Indian and Alaskan Native nations and cultures.
- Maintain records, submit written reports, process referral forms, draft memoranda and proposals, and write letters as needed;
- Participate fully in Office of Student Academic Affairs (SAA) staff development programs, efforts to evaluate and improve academic support programs for students, and appropriate SAA meetings;
- Schedule some evening and weekend appointments and meetings as necessary.

General Objectives of the American Indian Student Academic Services Program and the Office of Student Academic Affairs:
Housed in the College of Letters and Science's Office of Student Academic Affairs, the American Indian Student Academic Services (AISAS) Program addresses the academic, social, and cultural needs of American Indian students. Among its primary objectives are assisting incoming students with the transition to UW-Madison, and connecting incoming, transfer, and continuing students to student services and advising. In addition to collaborating with the American Indian Studies Program, multicultural academic programs, and the UW-Admissions Office to attract and retain students of color, AISAS also helps maintain ongoing communication with American Indian communities throughout Wisconsin.

UW-Madison currently enrolls approximately 275 American Indian and Alaskan Native undergraduate, graduate, and professional students representing over forty American Indian and Alaskan Native Nations, including the twelve federally recognized Wisconsin Indian Nations.

The general objectives of the Office of Student Academic Affairs (SAA) include: assisting students in realizing their human promise as citizens of a global community; preserving the integrity of an L&S degree by interpreting and implementing faculty policies; providing services, information, and support to students, faculty, staff, and other constituencies engaged in educational programs, policies, and outreach; and, assisting campus-wide efforts to integrate diverse voices into the University community in order to offer a welcoming, supportive, and responsive campus climate.

Staff are responsible for guiding students toward meeting certain goals during their first year. The Center for the First Year Experience at UW-Madison has created the following first-year goals. The AISAS Coordinator is expected to endorse theses goals:
1. Gaining confidence and competence as a college-level student.
2. Making positive connections with faculty, staff, and peers.
3. Engaging in behaviors that promote your personal health and balance.
4. Understanding oneself as a member of the socially diverse university community.
5. Developing awareness of the impact of your personal choices.

POSITION 
SUMMARY:
American Indian Student Services (AISS) is searching for a Senior Student Program Advisor to join the department's team of professionals dedicated to providing academic and cultural programming for American Indian students attending the University of Mew Mexico-Main Campus. The successful candidate will be responsible for coordinating and facilitating programs and services for students transferring to the UNM-Main Campus from UNM branch campus sites, community colleges, tribal coleges, and other colleges or universtities; new admits; and current UNM-Main Campus students. Dedication to student academic, personal, cultural, and social success; advanced oral and written skills; and social, cultural and networking expertise are critical qualifications the successful candidate must possess.
The individual selected for this position will:
  • Analyze freshman and transfer student admission applications, transfer evaluations and transcripts.
  • Provide academic advising for prospective, new, and current undergraduate students.
  • Provide federal financial aid and institutional, departmental, private and tribal scholarship advisement.
  • Provide initial advisement and subsequent follow-up to student academic inquiries; evaluate academic level(s); assist in the resolution of student academic challenges; and provide advisement on academic program changes.
  • Coordinate academic intervention activities and programming throughout the academic year.
  • Organize and participate in areas of complex project, operations, and/or events.
  • Develop and coordinate student mentorship program.
  • Collect, analyze and maintain transfer student data for department database.
  • Coordinate and serve as an active participant in a variety of department/division-specific and university-wide student programming initiatives.

MINIMUM 
QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's degree; at least 1 year of experience that is directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

    • Microsoft Access, specifically: 1) developing and maintaining department and/or program-specific database and 2) creating tables, forms and complex queries
    • Microsoft Excel, specifically: 1) creating complex spreadsheets using formulas, 2) creating forms & graphs, and 3) importing and exporting data
    • Microsoft PowerPoint, specifically: 1) utilizing hyperlinks in multimedia presentations and 2) creating presentations using sounds and graphics
  • Experience in/with:
    • Analyzing and interpreting student transcripts and associated documents; analyzing course prerequisits; certification; and/or curriculum/graduation requirements
    • Implementing knowledge of academic standards regarding probation and/or suspension processes/procedures to meet individual student needs
