The Small Business Administration (SBA) is seeking to hire summer students under the Student Temporary Employment Program (STEP).  The STEP provides maximum flexibility to both the student and manager because the nature of the work does not have to be related to the student's academic or career goals.  The STEP is designed to integrate the students' educational studies with a wide range of clerical, administrative, professional and/or technical experiences that support the Agency's mission.

The Summer program will begin as early as May 10, 2010 and end as late as September 30, 2010.  This is an exciting opportunity to serve the public and assist the Small Business Administration in stimulating America's economic growth!

The SBA is conveniently located near the Federal Center SW metro train stop and an exercise facility is located within the building.  Positions will be filled within various offices of the U.S. Small Business Administration.

The position(s) to be filled involve performing clerical duties for the SBA at various grade levels.  Work may include: 

GS-01:  Incumbent will sort mail or other documents into obvious categories according to specific guides or instructions; perform simple typing work not requiring the services of a qualified typist.  Typing, if performed, is limited to such things as typing labels or other brief information on file tabs, index cards, etc.; perform simple tabulating or counting of documents or other items received or dispatched.  In conjunction with other clerical duties may also for part of the time perform routine repetitive messenger work by collecting and delivering mail and other papers on a small pre-determined route and in accordance with specific directions or schedule.

GS-02:  Incumbent will perform routine clerical work not requiring any specialized training or experience; receive and direct telephone callers and/or visitors to the appropriate office staff members as well as provide routine answers regarding basic agency functions; receive and route incoming mail and documents; Assemble and prepare packages for special mailings, such as Federal Express, by typing labels, and attaching preprinted address labels for mailing; assist with the preparation and printing of routine correspondence and memorandum in final format, filing and copying of various materials; perform routine automated assistance by transmitting and receiving electronic messages; provide clerical support for group and/or team projects.

GS-03:  Incumbent will perform routine clerical work not requiring any specialized training or experience; receive calls and visitors, referring to appropriate staff members, and/or provide general information about the office; assist staff members of the office with carrying out program related activities such as the preparation of correspondence, request for information, survey studies and documents by gathering, reproducing and arranging selected information; assemble information packages and materials to be used by the office staff member and assist staff members with maintaining and updating office files.

GS-04:  Incumbent will perform general clerical work not requiring any specialized training or experience.  In addition, perform light typing not requiring the services of a qualified typist such as labels for folders or internal mail distribution; receive calls and visitors to the office and refer to appropriate staff members; provide inquirers of the office with a limited amount of information such as identifying staff members; receive and route mail and when necessary follow mail distribution assignments to route specific mailings and mail pickups; reproduce requested copies of memoranda, correspondence, and various other materials for the staff of the office; assist the office staff in performing a variety of duties such as distribution of supplies, equipment and hand carrying specific letters, memoranda, express mail packages, etc.

GS-05:  Incumbent will perform a variety of research assignments, which may entail gathering information when needed for special projects, any kind of long range or short range items; draft routine replies to general public and Congressional correspondence; perform various technical assignments in support of office staff; gather facts for routine reports; extract data from prescribed sources and compile and present results for review by higher level Specialists.

GS-06: Incumbent will develop methods for coordinating and preparing administrative reports and multiple uses of the data; uses computer software to type or revise various letters, memos and forms; receives most assignments in the form of electronic drafts; corrects erroneous use of word processing documents; standardizes headings and subheadings, margins, indentations, use of underling, etc.; corrects grammar, spelling, and punctuation and refers questions regarding content to originator; adjusts spacing of columns and tables for good appearance and clarity; performs other office support duties including acting as timekeeper, scheduling meetings, filing documents, sending and distributing mail, copying and maintaining office supplies and equipment and answering phone calls and routing calls to the appropriate staff.

GS-07:  Incumbent will use desktop publishing software to prepare varied news releases, brochures, reports, and publications highlighting the activities of the office; use word processing and graphics software to prepare reports and briefing documents, using spreadsheet software to maintain the unit's fiscal records, using project management software to track the status of a number of projects assigned to the unit; perform complex office automation duties requiring different approaches and methods.  This may include using different word processing packages to edit lengthy and complicated technical reports and resolving incompatibility problems in transferring text from one software package to another when menu options or specific software instructions are not available.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Administration: managing the daily activities of the NIEA office, including supervising staff and program monitoring, as well as coordinating with the Board on scheduled monthly meetings, committee meetings and any special meetings, e.g. with congressional representatives.
  • Fundraising: designing and executing long-range plans for a fundraising campaign and working with the Board to identify the budget and timeline for implementation,! management and reporting. The ED is also responsible for at least one major fundraising event annually, which may coincide with the annual convention.
  • Grant Development and Administration: solicitation, administration/supervision and reporting/evaluation of any grants received by NIEA. The grants must be aligned with NIEA's strategic priorities, and the MOAs must be approved in advance by the Board.
  • Fiscal Responsibility: day-to-day budget management for both the operating and convention budget. The ED works with the outside accountant and Board to ensure timely accounting and reporting of fiscal matters.
  • Legislative/Policy Analysis: overseeing the NIEA legislative agenda and coordinating with the Board, legislative consultants, and various elected officials and their assistants. The ED assists in developing policy and testimony for NIEA.
  • Convention and Other Special Events Management: maintaining, improving, ! and overseeing the annual convention. The ED is also responsible for c oordinating the Legislative Summit and any special events approved by the Board.
  • Strategic Vision and Planning: implementing and advancing the strategic vision and plan, as developed by the Board.

Skills and Qualifications

Klamath Riverkeeper is searching for an Upper Klamath Coordinator to develop and implement programs to restore water quality and fisheries throughout the Upper Klamath Basin. The Coordinator will work under the guidance of the Executive Director to implement existing projects, develop new initiatives, and form partnerships with local landowners, Tribes, and organizations that will further the goal of fishable and swimmable waterways throughout the Upper Klamath Basin. The position will be based in the Klamath Falls, Oregon area.
About Klamath Riverkeeper:  Klamath Riverkeeper was founded in 2006 to serve as a voice for communities concerned about degraded water quality and declining fisheries in the Klamath River Basin. We work closely with local Native American Tribes, commercial fishermen, and other organizations to enhance and protect water quality, water quantity, and restore fish habitat. To meet these goals, we use expert-informed policy advocacy, existing environmental laws, water quality monitoring, and grassroots organizing within affected communities.
 
Since its inception, Klamath Riverkeeper has been a leader in the effort to remove Klamath dams, regulate blooms of toxic algae, create and enforce clean water standards, and reform mining laws.

Major Responsibilities: The Upper Klamath Coordinator will work closely with the Executive Director and Lower Klamath Coordinator to develop and implement projects and campaigns to hold water polluters accountable, work with Tribes, ranchers, fishermen, and the public to protect water and fisheries resources and represent the organization in the region. The Coordinator will also conduct outreach activities and work with the Executive Director to raise funds.
 
The successful candidate will have:
 

  • 3-5 years experience working on environmental and/or political campaigns
  • Experience with issues addressed by environmental law, policy and regulation, emphasizing the Clean Water Act and National Environmental Policy Act
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience with web based communications and a digital office environment

Internship Opportunity - Anasazi State Park Museum in Boulder, Utah



- Internship Opportunity: The Anasazi State Park Museum in Boulder, Utah is
looking for Summer 2010 Interns. The internship is for 10-12 weeks and
includes a stipend of $75/week, plus board. Within the park is one of the
largest Ancestral Puebloan villages (Coombs Archaeological Site) west of
the Colorado River.  The village was occupied from AD 1160 to 1235.
Archaeological excavations revealed more than 100 structures which may have
housed as many as 200 people. The internship familiarizes interns with
projects and duties in all areas of a state park museum.  The interns will
spend time collections management, interpretation, and visitor services.
The focus of this internship will be research relating to the analysis of
stone tools found in southeastern Utah. The intern will be to implement
typological analysis, functional analysis, and technological analysis of
projectile points curated at the Anasazi State Park Museum and affiliated
Museums with similar collections.

Additionally, the selected interns will facilitate a Lithic Technology

2010 Public Health Apprentice Program

CDC is seeking applicants for participation in the Public Health Apprentice Program (PHAP), a two-year workforce development program providing training and frontline work experience in public health. Apprentices will develop skills and competencies in support of a variety of public health programs relating to health promotion and disease prevention.

Apprenticeships will involve assignments primarily in local health departments. All apprenticeships will begin on or about July 20, 2010. The program is geared toward recent college graduates (BA/BS) who are beginning a career in public health. Successful completion of the program will prepare apprentices for future career opportunities in public health at national, state and local levels. Qualifications:

Applicants must have received a bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year institution. Individuals with a bachelor's degree in the physical and social sciences as well as the humanities are encouraged to apply. Applicants should be flexible about relocating to assignments within the United States.

Work Activities:

Apprentices will perform some or all of the following job functions:

  • Interaction with public health clients (e.g., interviewing, counseling and education).
  • Investigation of public health problems and issues (e.g., assisting in disease outbreak investigations and assisting in implementing corrective actions).
  • Data collection, analysis and reporting (e.g., disease case reports and field investigations).
  • Surveillance activities (e.g., recording and processing case reports from healthcare providers, labs, hospitals; analyzing information for trends).
  • Public health education (e.g., developing public health education information for individuals or communities; helping to plan and deliver presentations and publicity campaigns).
  • Provision of public health services (e.g., facilitating clinical services, making home visits).
  • Community involvement and partnership (e.g., working with community agencies to design and conduct programs; participating in community health assessments).
  • Liaison with other entities in the public health system (e.g., working with private healthcare providers, hospitals, laboratories, medical staff and community-based organizations).

Locations

Apprenticeships will be established in public health agencies throughout the United States and the U.S. Territories. Specific assignment locations have not yet been determined.

Salary and Benefits:

The starting salary range is approximately $35,000-$40,000, and will vary based on location.
Apprentices are eligible for a full range of benefits.
